Just, Only (~ㄹ/을 뿐이다, ~ㄹ/을 뿐만 아니라)

In this lesson, you will learn how to use 뿐 in various situations. First, you'll learn how to use 뿐 after a noun.

Then, you'll learn how to use 뿐 after a verb/adjective - both at the end of a sentence and in the middle of a sentence.

Finally, you'll learn how to use ~뿐만 아니라 which means "not only A, but also B." Let's get started!

Just (~ㄹ/을 뿐이다)

Its main function is to express limitations or the fact that there is no other reasonable choice but to do a certain action.

The English translation 뿐 is similar to "just" or "only", but is more of a grammatical principle than a word.

There are various circumstances in which it can be used - all of which usually have similar translations.

The first of these is when placed after a noun at the end of a sentence.

By placing 뿐 after a noun, you can create the meaning "only/ nothing but...(that noun)".

When you do this, you must append 이 다 to the noun and conjugate it to the future tense (~ 일 ). 뿐 may then be placed after the construction.

For example:

그 것은 농담일 뿐

(That's just a joke)

~ㄹ/을 뿐이다 is a Korean expression used to express that the only possible or rational action or choice is to do something or make a decision.

Construction of ~ㄹ/을 뿐이다

The grammar for this conjugation follows the basic pattern of the base form of the verb or adjective followed by ~ㄹ/을 뿐이다, depending on the final consonant of the verb or adjective.

Here are examples of the construction and function of ~ㄹ/을 뿐이다 in sentences:

Verb + ~ㄹ/을 뿐이다:

"to do" in Korean is 하다. If one wants to state that the only reasonable option is to do something, the proper construction is:

>> 공부를 해야 할 뿐이다

(The only reasonable choice is to study.)

>> 공부하다 (study) > 공부 + 하다 (to do study)

Adjective + ~ㄹ/을 뿐이다:

"difficult" in Korean is 어렵다. If one wants to state that the only reasonable choice is to do something difficult, the proper construction is:

>> 어려운 결정을 내리기를 뿐이다.

(The only sensible choice is to make tough decisions.)

>> 내리기다 (to get off)

By using ~ㄹ/을 뿐이다, the speaker emphasizes that a certain action or decision is the only rational or reasonable option in a certain context.

Not only (~ㄹ/을 뿐만 아니라)

~ㄹ/을 뿐만 아니라 is a Korean expression used to express that something is not only limited to one thing, but also includes other things or aspects. This expression is often used to convey additional information or involve more than one element.

The construction of ~ㄹ/을 뿐만 아니라 can be explained as follows:

Verb + ~ㄹ/을 뿐만 아니라:

예를 들어, "to like" in Korean is 좋아하다. If one wants to express that he/she likes not only one thing, but also another, the proper construction is:

음악을 좋아하며 미술도 좋아하는 편이에요. (He likes music as well as art.)

Adjective + ~ㄹ/을 뿐만 아니라:

예를들어, "interesting" in Korean is 재미있다. If one wants to state that something is not only interesting, but also something else, the proper construction is:

이 책은 재미있다 뿐만 아니라 유익하기도 해요. (This book is not only interesting, but also informative.)

Noun + ~ㄹ/을 뿐만 아니라:

예를 들어, "travel" in Korean is 여행. If one wants to state that he/she not only likes travel, but also likes other things, the proper construction would be:

여행을 좋아하며 새로운 문화를 배우는 것도 좋아해요.

(She loves traveling and also enjoys learning about new cultures.)

By using ~ㄹ/을 뿐만 아니라, the speaker widens his/her scope and shows that not only one aspect is relevant, but also that there are additional nuances that need to be noted or considered.
